Alton “Roy” Lindstrom, age 81, passed away on December 10th, 2016, at 1:55 p.m. in Tacoma General Hospital from complications of a stroke.

Born in Ione, Ore., on July 1, 1935, to Franklin and Edris Lindstrom, also of Ione, Roy was the oldest of twin boys. Roy and Arthur attended a one-room schoolhouse north of Ione, and graduated from Ione High School in 1954. The brothers joined the Army in 1958, and were honorably discharged in 1960.

After returning to Ione, Roy raised cattle and dryland wheat along with his father and brother as Lindstrom & Sons on 4,000 acres north of Ione. In 1962, Roy married his first wife, Janet Mason (Brink), and the couple had two children together, Paula J. Lindstrom and Troy J. Lindstrom.

In 1968, the twin brothers opened Lindstrom Brother Iron Works specializing in the fabrication of implement hitches, boom trucks, flatbed trailers and many other products still in use 50 years later. When circle irrigation was in its infancy the two brothers successfully designed and built their own hydraulic driven pivot irrigation system. Eventually, Roy and Art ventured on, each taking their skills on separate paths. Roy chose to continue with his fabrication and welding talents, opening a shop known as Royal Welding. His work ethic and friendly nature brought him much success.

In 1981, Roy married Billie Akers and they began traveling together to various states through the U.S. Eventually the couple found they preferred to stay in the northern area of Washington state. Roy was well known for his talent and knowledge in designing, fabricating and producing many items throughout his lifetime, although his love for cooking enabled him to combine his hobby and work by building numerous smokers and barbecues for his customers. He was a hard-working man and he continued this activity until his last days.

Roy lived a lifetime full of love, never forgetting his roots, and he remained in contact with his childhood friends. He and Billie returned to visit the town of Ione where there would be celebrations and shared memories of time gone by whenever they could.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Paula Lindstrom, and first wife Janet Lindstrom.

He is survived by his second wife and beloved partner of 35 years, Billie (Akers) Lindstrom, of Puyallup, Wash.; his twin brother and sister-in law, Art and June Lindstrom of Pendleton; Roy’s son and daughter-in-law, Troy J. and Lori Lindstrom of Umatilla; stepson Bill J. Brink; stepchildren Mike Akers, Davina Lindstrom and Deanna Spencer; grandchildren Nikki McElligott O’Connell, Bree Renew, Alisha Akers, Stephen Spencer, Gabrielle Brock, Jennifer Stoeger, Jon Jon Boyce and Chelsie Spencer; and the light of his life, Roy’s great-grandchildren Elaina Brock and Aria Stoeger. Other survivors include multiple nieces and nephews, cousins and close family friends.

Memorial services will take place at the United Church of Christ in Ione, Oregon. Interment will be in the Lindstrom family plot. Services are pending and will be announced at a future date.

Jane Irene Baker

Jane Irene Baker of Hermiston, Oregon, died on January 18th at the age of 82. She was born on June 9th, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, to parents Theodore and Bernice Jacobson.

Jane was an only child but was surrounded by many aunts and uncles. The family moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, where her father worked for a salmon canning company as an accountant. During WWII the family relocated to Seattle, Washington. At an early age Jane started riding the bus to church and made lifelong friends at church camps.

After finishing high school, she decided to attend Washington State University where she met Ronald Baker. Just 3½ years later she graduated with a dual major in home economics and science. The two were married at Plymouth Congregational Church in Seattle on June 19th, 1955.

The couple moved to Hermiston, Oregon, where Ron worked for Doane’s Agriculture Service and Jane started her teaching career at Stanfield High School. Since Jane was still very young the principal requested that she wear high-heel shoes to help differentiate herself from the students.

“Farm Women On The Go” read the title from the national publication Farm Wife News in July 1972. Not a big surprise to those that knew her but a huge compliment to this city-bred now country girl. Jane was always involved in something from being a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, PEO member, substitute teacher, teaching cooking classes, mother of 5, wife and woman of faith — she always seemed to be on the go.

Both Ron and Jane are founding members of Hermiston Christian Center where in 1979 Jane became the first principal of the school. Throughout all of this Jane also worked at the family business of C & B Livestock. Jane continued to teach in her later years at Hermiston High School as the ESL teacher and tutoring many of the students. The book she enjoyed most was the Bible but after that was any cookbook she could get her hands on. She always said she liked reading them like novels.

She is survived by husband of 61 years Ronald Baker of Hermiston; daughter Sheila Banke and husband Dan of McMinnville, Ore.; daughter Colleen Williams and husband Randy of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; daughter Suzanne Coggings and husband Craig of Pittsburgh, Pa.; daughter Serena Beason and husband Jim of Denver, Colo.; son Ray Baker of Hermiston, Ore.; grandchildren Nathaniel (Lindsey), Caleb (Annie), Danielle (Jadon), Rachel, Abby, Hannah, Kennidy, Kambree and Kilee; and great-grandchildren Jude and Preston.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers or contributions the family asks that you pick up one of Jane’s favorite books (Bible or cookbook) and enjoy what’s inside with family or friends and think of her.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at the Hermiston Christian Center, 1825 W. Highland Ave., Hermiston, Ore.

John Russell Hendricks

Left in the dark —

I called him John; others called him my dad. He was a man of many names to many people, depending upon when and where you knew him from. So many at one time or another called him a friend, brother, son, uncle, as just about everyone knew him or of him. He is gone way before his time should have been but the demons (which he struggled with off and on throughout his life on a daily basis) were far too great for him to overcome.

John passed away Saturday morning, February 11, in Zillah, Washington, at the age of 63. I know for a fact that he was a proud father, as whenever I was with him or went to visit he would tell anybody he knew and strangers alike, “That’s my daughter.” We had many good times together when I was growing up, which became further between as I became an adult, but if we had something planned he would get all gussied up and ready to go with total excitement in his eyes. Our biggest thing when I was growing up was going to the local car races, which we did every Saturday night for as long as I can remember. Sunday, though, was left for Dale Earnhardt and NASCAR on TV.

He was an amazing truck driver for many years at Simplot (where he was known as JB, and the name carried on after), earning the number one and number two driver for many, many years.

So it is with these memories I say goodbye, so long to a good friend. It’s been a long ride and now the struggle is over.

John is preceded in death by his father Dick Hendricks and son John Lee. He is survived by his mother Virginia Carnell; brother Gil and wife Nita Hendricks and many nieces and nephews; dear friend Tony Bliss and family; and myself, Dawn Hendricks, his daughter.

A private service will be held.
