Donald B. Madsen

Donald B. Madsen, longtime Hermiston resident, was born on March 7, 1930, in Los Angeles to parents Bert and Emma Hall Madsen. He died on January 15, 2017, in La Grande at the age of 86 years.

Don was raised and attended schools in Monroe, Utah, and later Bountiful, Utah. He attended Davis High School, participating in football, basketball and baseball and graduating in 1948. While at Davis High School Don met the love of his life, Laurel Joyce Sibbett, and they were united in marriage on June 30, 1950, in the Salt Lake City Temple. He attended and played both basketball and football at Weber College and then later at the College of Idaho, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education. Don then earned his masters degree in education at the University of Oregon.

He started teaching and coaching in 1952 in Parma, Idaho, later in Caldwell. Idaho, and Dayville, Ore., before moving to Hermiston in 1956. Don taught history and driver’s ed, among various other subjects, as well as coaching basketball and football. He retired from teaching in 1990 after 33 years in the Hermiston School District. After retirement he coached for one year as the boys varsity basketball coach at Riverside High School in Boardman. He then coached basketball at BMCC for several years with longtime friend Larry Bartee.

Don was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving a church service mission with his wife at the Willow Creek Branch for two years in Lexington and Heppner. He also served in various other callings including ward clerk and Stake High Councilman. He enjoyed coaching at any level, supporting his grandchildren in their activities, and hunting. There wasn’t a child or animal that didn’t enjoy his gentle manner.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joyce Madsen, La Grande, Ore.; sons Michael Madsen, Hermiston, Ore., and Mark Madsen and wife JoAnna, La Grande, Ore.; grandchildren Ashley (Greg), Allison, Steven (Danielle), Anne (Jake), Soren (Lacey), Seth and Sophia; great-grandchildren Kole, Emery, Tyler, Elizabeth, Angel, Charlotte and Sawyer; and several nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mac Madsen, and sister Judy Forster.

A viewing and funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017. The viewing will be at 9:00 a.m., to be followed by the funeral at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1035 S.E. Ninth St., Hermiston, Ore. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.

Priscilla ‘Deanne’ Lightle

Priscilla “Deanne” Lightle of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on October 13, 1924, in Ottawa, Kansas, to Bert and Phoebe Harris Gilliland. She died on January 18, 2017, in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 92 years.

After graduating from high school in 1942, she worked in the office of Scott’s Department Store for 14 years. Deanne married Calvin “Curly” Lightle in 1943, while he was home on furlough. The family moved to Hermiston, Oregon, in 1953, where Deanne worked for Montgomery Ward for 10 years. She then worked as a caregiver for 25 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years and has attended the First Christian Church for several years. Deanne was a charter member of the Bloomer Girl’s Garden Club in 1962 and was active until her health failed a few years ago. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary for many years. She loved reading, working in her flowers, and animals. Deanne and Curly loved music and dancing. What a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and best friend. She was a loving and gentle lady who will be missed so much. Mom retired at the age of 85. She was determined and strong to the end. Goodbye, “Our Little Energizer Bunny.”

She is survived by her daughter Kristy Brown and her husband Tom, Hermiston, Ore.; grandsons Travis Christian and wife Heather, Hermiston, Ore., Ryan Christian, Hermiston, Ore., and Daniel Lightle, Portland, Ore.; granddaughter Tori Lightle, Boise, Idaho; great-grandsons Cutter and Tyson Christian, Hermiston, Ore., and Rhett and Rory Lightle, Boise, Idaho; nephew Frank Lupton and wife Yvonne, Minnesota; and extended family Don and Mary Ann Christian, Hermiston, Ore.

Deanne was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Curly Lightle; sons Rick and Terry Lightle; and two sisters and three brothers.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church, Hermiston, Oregon. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.

Bobby E. Day Jr. was born on March 25, 1964, in Sacramento, California, to parents Bobby Day Sr. and Rebecca Tatum Day. He died on January 18, 2017, at his home in Umatilla, Oregon, at the age of 52 years.

Bobby was raised in California until the age of 9 when the family moved to Redmond, Oregon, and then to Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 12. Bobby graduated from Hermiston High School in the class of 1982. He joined the United States Army in 1983 and served until his honorable discharge in 1986.

He lived in Boise, Idaho and worked for Direct TV until moving to Umatilla, Oregon, in 2013 where he has lived since.

Bobby enjoyed playing the guitar and writing music.

He is survived by his mother, Rebecca Day, Umatilla, Ore.; father Bobby E. Day Sr., Stockton, Calif.; sons Bobby G. Day, Fruitland, Idaho, and Brandon Day, Boise, Idaho; sister Bonnie Walchli, Hermiston, Ore.; fiancée Terri Carter, Umatilla, Ore.; and three grandchildren, Bobby Leo, Isaiah and David.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 125 E. Beech St., Hermiston, Oregon. Burial with military honors will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.

Ronda M. Dyer Brockett was born on April 16, 1965, in Hermiston, Oregon, to parents Jerry and Loretta Moyer Dyer. She died on January 22, 2017, at her home in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 51 years.

Ronda was raised and attended schools in Hermiston, Oregon. She was involved in peewee rodeo when she was growing up and continued rodeo as she grew older, competing in barrel racing. She lived and worked in Yakima, Washington, for a time before returning to Hermiston, Oregon, in 2003 where she has lived since.

Ronda worked in quality control at Riverpoint Farm, Hermiston, Oregon, for several years. She enjoyed working in her yard, sewing, crafts, and word search puzzles. Ronda cherished time with her grandchildren and her family.

She is survived by her husband Steven Brockett, Hermiston, Ore.; sons Jeffery Ough, Yakima, Wash., Joey Ough, Spokane Valley, Wash., and Nicholas Ough, Yakima, Wash.; parents Jerry and Loretta Dyer, Hermiston, Ore.; brothers Rick, Darrell, Duane and Jerry Dyer, all of Hermiston, Ore.; sister Katherine Ramirez, Hillsboro, Ore.; grandchildren Emma, Lilian, Terry and Christopher; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ronda was preceded in death by her niece, Mackenzie Jo Dyer, her grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.

Jessie “Naomi” Larkin of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on February 3, 1940, in Baker, Oregon, to parents Haskel “Hack” and M. Ellen Tibbs Bloom. She died on January 20, 2017, in Portland, Oregon, at the age of 76 years.

Naomi was raised for the better part of her childhood in Stanfield, Oregon, graduating from Stanfield High School in the class of 1958. Naomi was united in marriage to Harold L. Larkin on May 2, 1965, in Hermiston, Oregon.

She worked at the Umatilla Hospital and later at Good Shepherd Community Hospital for 25 years. Naomi then worked in the medical office of Dr. Maguire and Dr. Brueske in Hermiston for 10 years before she retired to focus on being a full-time grandma.

She was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Naomi loved to bake and enjoyed sharing her treats with her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, crocheting, sewing, and taking pictures. Naomi cherished the time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Harold Larkin, Hermiston, Ore.; son John Larkin and wife Monique, Hermiston, Ore.; daughter Diane Cherry and husband Dean, Hermiston, Ore.; sisters LaGreta Johnson and Beulah Otzenberger, both of Hermiston, Ore.; sisters at heart Lori Rasmussen and Jean Carlton; aunt Jessie Tarter, Hermiston, Ore.; grandchildren: Ashlei, Tucker (Hayley), Mahaila, Cody, Hayden, Trey and Mika; great-grandchildren Jenna, Carter, Payton and Riley; nieces and nephews Bob Bloom, Debbie Brandt, Steve Layman, Susan Phykitt, Pam Johnson, Mark Johnson and Mike Johnson; and numerous great-nieces, -nephews and cousins.

Naomi was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Jim Bloom.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 855 W. Highland Ave., Hermiston, Oregon.

Dorla Christman-Hahn of Hermiston, Oregon left this world on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. She was horn in San Diego, California, on October 11, 1930.

Dorla led a very colorful life that included living in over 40 cities as a child. Her father worked in the construction of dams and airports throughout the United States, starting first in Alaska and ending in California. This adventure included building a dam in Canada.

Dorla met her true love in California, married and was the mother of two children, Greg and Michelle.

Dorla had many loves that included anything to do with the outdoors, fishing, painting and dancing to “Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison. Dorla was a zealous lover of painting and started later in life. Being self-taught, Dorla painted in many mediums with watercolors being her favorite. She was also a member of the Allied Arts Association and has painted more than 200 pieces of work. Her art has been on display for sale at Sno Road Winery and various other cities throughout Oregon and Washington.

Dorla worked in the restaurant industry for over 30 years, owning her own restaurants and catering businesses.

Dorla is survived by her daughter Michelle Murray of Hermiston, Ore.; her grandson Ryan Murray and his wife Mariah; and four great-grandchildren, Dakota Stoneburner and Connor, Colby and Kennda Murray.

Dorla was predeceased by her son Greg and her grandson Jimmy.

A celebration of life will be held this summer.
