Phyllis Jean De Long Chess

Phyllis Jean De Long Chess passed away on March 19 at her home in Island City at the age of 84.

Family members will be available to receive guests on Thursday, March 29 from 2 to 4 at Daniels-Knopp Funeral & Cremation Center, 1502 Seventh St., La Grande for visitation and viewing. A funeral will be held on Friday, March 30 beginning at 11 a.m. at the La Grande First Christian Church, 901 Penn Avenue. Committal and interment will follow at the Hillcrest East Cemetery.

Phyllis was born on May 25, 1933, to Lois Conley De Long and Vernon De Long in La Grande. She was very proud of her heritage; which included Conleys, Goldens, Gekelers and De Longs; all pioneers, who settled in our valley. Her great-great-grandfather, Ben Brown, was the first man to build a permanent home and move his family to La Grande. Phyllis spent all her growing up years on a farm, which her brother and his wife still own and occupy. She always said she didn’t like living on a farm, but she treasured these years!

The first four years of her schooling she attended a one-room school, the Liberty School on Gekeler Lane, where it now sits next to the Blue Mtn. Grange. The school was closed when she was ready for the fifth grade, and she and her brothers rode the bus to Willow School. She graduated from La Grande High School in 1951.

On Dec. 27, 1952, she and her high school sweetheart, John Chess, were married. They had four children. He died on Oct. 23, 1982.

She married Adrion Rimbey, a former high school classmate, on June 28, 1987. He was a barber in Hermiston, so she moved to Hermiston where she lived for 26 years. While living in Hermiston she attended the First Christian Church and was active in the Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary.

In Dec. of 2014 she and Adrion moved “back home” where they had purchased a home in Island City. Four months later Adrion was killed in an accident involving his ATV. She lived in the home until her death.

She was a life-long member of the La Grande First Christian Church and a member of the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Cheryl and Tom Van Handel of Redmond, Jack and Tammy Chess of La Grande, Roger Chess of La Grande and Larry and Sandy Chess of Boise; two brothers and their wives, Dale and Jackie De Long of Island City and Cecil and Linda De Long of La Grande; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.

Contributions in memory of Phyllis may be made to the La Grande First Christian Church Memorial Fund.

Mescal Paine (P.A.I.N.E.) of Hermiston, Oregon, was born Mescal Payne (P.A.Y.N.E) on July 13, 1926, in Wallowa County to Edward T. Payne and Gladys V. (Conrad) Payne. She died on March 21, 2018, in Hermiston, at the age of 91.

Mescal was raised in Union where she graduated from Union High in 1945 (Go Bobcats). Mescal then went to Springfield, Missouri, and attended Central Bible College for three years, and then to Eastern Oregon College in La Grande where she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

In December of 1951, when Mescal was returning to Wasco, where she was teaching, God planted Sergeant Burton Paine on a Greyhound bus seat next to her. This was the beginning of their long-distance courtship and after six months they were married on June 2, 1952, in Daly City, California. This union would last for 62 years, until Burt’s passing in 2015.

After their wedding, Burt and Mescal lived in San Francisco where he was currently stationed. Burt was then transferred to Germany, and after the birth of their first child Corinne, they would join him. At the completion of his military service they returned to Umatilla County where Burt would try his hand at farming and Mescal would return to her teaching career.

Mescal taught school in Umatilla for three years when their second child, Douglas, was born. Mescal then transferred to the Hermiston School District, teaching second grade at West Park Elementary School. She would then transfer to the new Rocky Heights Elementary School where she would teach first grade for the remainder of her 31 years in teaching. Mescal retired in June 1984 after teaching in excess of 1,000 kids. Mescal would often laugh and say “I’ve been in school for 47 years and I’ve never made it out of the first grade.”

Mescal was a member of the Hermiston Christian Center and the Happy Ramblers Travel Club. When Burt retired in 1988 they would spend their winters snow-birding in Arizona. Mescal enjoyed sewing, reading, camping, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Mescal also taught children in her church for many years.

She is survived by her daughter Corinne Peacock and husband Terrence of Sherwood; son Douglas Paine and wife Tia of Hermiston; five grandchildren: Dawn, Ty, Kurtis, Andrea and Ashli; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mescal was preceded in death by her husband Burt, parents Ed and Gladys, sister Sybil and brother David.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at 9 a.m. at the Hermiston Christian Center, 1825 W. Highland Ave., Hermiston, Oregon. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery, Hermiston, Oregon.

Joshua Kenneth Herrig

Joshua Kenneth Herrig of Heppner, Oregon, was born on January 4, 1983, at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon, to Maureen and Craig Herrig. He died on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, in a tragic single-car accident on Highway 74, on his way to get dinner after work. He was the passenger and was not wearing his seatbelt.

Josh was raised in Bend, Ore., and went to Redmond High School. From the time he was 12 years old, he worked his summers ranching in Heppner with his best friend. At age 17, he left home to pursue ranching and it became his lifestyle. He worked for Jon Flynn of Eight Mile Ranch for the last 17 years. Josh could do it all on the ranch, from cows to farming. If you could think up a job, he could do it and do it well.

Ranching wasn’t his whole life, though. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, riding horses (although he wouldn’t admit it), riding his motorcycle or anything fast and daring. He was a lover of animals, especially his dogs, and many have said that he “was kind, always happy, had a big heart, and always willing to help.”

He is survived by his dogs Hank and Skidder, mother Maureen McNeill, father Craig Herrig, sister Jessica Herrig, niece Skylar Morton and grandma Natalie Coons.

He was preceded by death by two grandpas he loved dearly, Lauren Skeel and Kenneth Coons.

Joshua’s celebration of life will be held at the Morrow County Fairgrounds in Heppner on Saturday, April 7 at noon. We welcome all in the community who knew him, all friends, and all family. It will be potluck style, so please bring a dish to share with everyone. The dress will be casual — in fact if you have a terrible plaid shirt and a ratty ball cap, wear it.
